Alongside many years in the nursing profession and bringing up my three children, in 1982 I completed my professional training in Autogenic Training and Therapy. This was with Dr Wolfgang Luthe, who researched and developed AT with its founder - Dr Schultz. I have undertaken experiential work in basic AT and Autogenic Neutralisation. It was through my personal experience of autogenics that I realised the exciting yet neglected potential of self-healing processes. I was fortunate to be able to use my nursing qualification and experience to train as an autogenic therapist.

My professional training in AT was gained before the formation of the British Autogenic Society in 1984 (then named British Association for Autogenic Training and Therapy) of which I am a Founder Member.

I have served on the Executive Committee of the British Autogenic Society in various capacities: Newsletter Editor, Honorary Secretary, Training Course Organiser, Vice Chairperson, Autogenic Society Representative to UKCP. I have very much enjoyed all my connections and work for the British Autogenic Society.

In addition I have written and had published articles (in the 'GP' 1994, Positive Health 1997, featured in 'Top Sante' 1996, several in 'In Balance') and acted as consultant advisor for various articles and publications about Autogenic Therapy (e.g. Encyclopaedia of Complementary Medicine published by Dorling Kindersley).

AT provides excellent tools for self-help for life. The unique autogenic process enables people to gain new insights and attitudes, bringing about more effective balance in their physical and emotional well-being. The key is not 'mind over matter', but 'mind/body'.

Professional Training for Autogenic Therapists
I am a Tutor/Supervisor for the British Autogenic Society. As a personal supervisor, and lecturer on British Autogenic Society training courses, I have found the task of supporting new therapists in gaining their professional qualification with the Society very rewarding. This requires giving support and guidance to student therapists on an individual basis, and leading tutorial seminars.

Author
Together with Christine Pinch, then a fellow member of the Training Committee of the British Autogenic Society, I have written a book: Autogenic Therapy - Self-help for Mind and Body. The book fills a gap in available literature about AT. It provides a thorough introduction to Autogenic Therapy for those considering learning it with a therapist. It is an invaluable reference book for those who have already learned AT, and a useful resource for health professionals who wish to refer their patients/clients, or are considering for themselves the professional therapist courses of the British Autogenic Society.

Autogenic Therapy: Self-help for Mind and Body (ISBN 0 7171 3422 9) is published by the Newleaf imprint of Gill and Macmillan, and is available now at a recommended retail price of £13.99.

It may also be bought direct from the British Autogenic Society. Please send a cheque for £16.49 (£13.99 + £2.50 p&p) to:

Counsellor
# Heimler Social Functioning
# Analysis of Heimler Scale (Questionnaire)
# Heimler Interview Technique
I find the use of the methods of Eugene Heimler's Human Social Functioning an invaluable adjunct to the autogenic process. When contemplating life-stresses or uncertainties about current life issues, the special structured interview, with the questionnaire analysis if appropriate, enables the client to view the situation from a different perspective, make positive decisions to take specific steps of actions - all of this with the support of the counsellor.

I use these methods either before an autogenics course, or after - never simultaneously, as this may interfere with the autogenic process, which should always be respected in its own right, without intervention.

Industry - Stress Management Consultant
# Autogenic Training

I have delivered more than 30 AT courses to approximately 180 people in various work settings, notably British Airways. Results have consistently shown increase in performance and productivity with less time off for sickness, and improved self-esteem, confidence and coping ability.

# Personal Development Training
Workshops exploring team functioning, stress awareness and personal communication skills bring about increased cohesiveness and understanding between colleagues.
